Evans on Earth: Now Changing the World Through Her Academic Summer Program Experiences
(PRWEB) April 8, 2008 -- Not many 17-year-old high school students lie awake at night thinking about changing the world and planning fundraising drives to make that dream a reality, but for Marissa Evans, a high school junior, that's exactly what she does. While most young women in high school might be fascinated by the outcome of this season's American Idol, she is busy planning an education in political science, journalism, and international relations at a major university. Junior Statesmen proudly announces that enrollment for the summer programs is now open.
Evans' time at the JSA Summer School at Stanford University gave her a tantalizing glimpse of what the future could hold for her when she attended a rigorous summer course (http://www.jsa.org/summer-programs-homepage/summer-programs-homepage.html) of government, politics, and public speaking that would make most college seniors quake at the workload. After her baptism by fire, Evans came out of the three-week course energized and confident, wanting to embark on a career that could change the world in her eyes.
The 68-year old Junior Statesmen Foundation, a national non-profit educational program, sponsors a series of rigorous summer schools for high school students at some of the most prestigious universities in the country, such as Georgetown, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford. These advanced students face a daunting class load of advanced placement courses taught by university professors.
Evans is quick to tell you that in 2007 she not only attended the JSA Summer School, but also the California State Symposia in Sacramento. Her goal in summer 2008 is to attend the summer program at Georgetown. Evans is particularly excited to attend the Democratic National Convention Symposia with JSA. The democrats might not decide on their candidate until then, which allows her to witness history.
Evans says, "It is important for students to join a JSA Summer Program (http://www.jsa.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=88) or stay active in terms of politics. Be it interning, volunteering for a local politician's office, or volunteering for a Darfur organization, the best thing anyone can do is try to get involved with some political activity."
Evans raised every penny for her summer experiences. Evans explains that if she raised the money, anyone ca. She also says, "If you get into a JSA program, do not let money deter you from attending these life-changing programs."
