Gazette of Politics and Business Names Viable #2 on List of Exceptional 53 Businesses

Rockville, MD (PRWEB) September 26, 2008 -- The Gazette of Politics and Business released its list of 53 exceptional businesses in the State of Maryland and placed Viable second, putting the company in between nationally known brands Honest Tea, the maker of popular flavored tea beverages, and Discovery Communications, which owns cable TV networks such as Animal Planet and The Learning Channel.

Viable is a provider of video relay services (VRS) for deaf and hard of hearing people. Founder and President John T.C. Yeh, who is deaf, accepted the award on behalf of the company. "This award is a true reflection of the contributions of everyone at Viable. This is every employee's accomplishment and I couldn't be prouder of the heights to which the company has taken itself," said Mr. Yeh.

The awards program, the first by The Gazette of Politics and Business, recognizes businesses and organizations in Maryland based on criteria that included annual revenue, employee growth, noteworthy product or service innovations, community service efforts and how the companies portrayed themselves as good places to work.

David Edgerly, director of Economic Development for the State of Maryland, and Cliff Chiet, publisher of The Gazette of Politics and Business, gave speeches that preceded a lavish dinner at the Doubletree Hotel in Bethesda. Said Mr. Edgerly of all companies honored, "These exceptional Maryland businesses are consistently on the leading edge of innovation. We owe a lot to them for the job creation they generate, which helps keep Maryland at the top of the list of the best places to work in the country."

Viable was recognized for its extraordinary growth over the past few years, for providing its employees with a dynamic workplace, and for its innovation in developing next-generation videophones for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

The complete list of the companies honored can be seen at www.gazette.net/business/.

About Telecommunications Relay Services

Mandated by Title IV of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, telecommunications relay services (TRS) enables individuals with hearing or speech disabilities to achieve functional equivalence by accessing telephone systems to place or receive calls through an intermediary known as a relay operator or relay interpreter. Emergent IP technology has given rise to video-based solutions, which are known as video relay services (VRS). VRS options include using a webcam or a videophone to connect to a video relay interpreter, and allow deaf and hard of hearing callers for whom sign language is native to fully achieve the ideal of functional equivalence.

The Politics of Health
I was thinking about the quarrel (well, fight to the death, actually) between conventional medicine and alternatives like herbal or holistic medicine. So, I did some research to see if I could figure out what's the big beef between these to approaches to healing. I always believed that herbal medicine pre-dated conventional medicine by thousands of years. It turns out that it doesn't, not by THOUSANDS, anyway! Conventional medicine appears to be younger than herbal medicine by only about 1,100 years.
